The Healing Arts: How Alternative Medicine Can Help You

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Alternative medicine goes by many different names, holistic medicine, natural medicine, healing arts, etc. It is used generally by people who do not trust the medical establishment, or people that have simply not benefited from it. Other times, these people may come from families that have practiced these holistic therapies for centuries. Although these therapies have been met with distrust and cynicism in the West, they are becoming widely accepted and even many health clinics in the United States now use them in one way or another.

These healing arts are too many to list here, but the following are some of the more well known and accepted practices: Qigong, Shamanism, acupuncture, reflexology, Feng Shui, massage, chiropractic, yoga, meditation, etc. Each of these practices is different and can help or heal in different ways. The underlying theory behind each of these treatments though, is that the body has the ability to heal and recover naturally. This belief goes back thousands of years to man’s infancy, and still remains a powerful force today. The Bible, Quran, and other religious texts mention this healing often. The term faith healing is used to describe it occasionally, but terms such as natural and holistic are becoming more mainstream.

These theories and modalities also have the common belief that the body is made of pure energy. The energies that run throughout our bodies, known as meridians, can become blocked or out of balance; in fact, this is an inevitable reality. Through these natural healing arts, the body can be put back on track and the energies within can become balanced once again.

Another commonly held belief is that the body contains chakras, powerful energies that guide over specific parts of our bodies. When chakras are in balance, the body works at its maximum efficiency. When these chakras become blocked they do not work at their full efficiency and serious physical and mental disturbances can result. These blockages can be removed though when practices such as chakra balancing, cleansing, and healing are invoked.

Most people that give these healing arts a try do experience some form of positive result, but as with all modalities this recovery is not guaranteed to work for everyone. This is self healing so it is up to the body when all is said and done. The only way to know if these holistic therapies are going to work for you personally is to give them a try. You may want to do some research on each healing art so you can find the one that is best suited for you and your needs. Acupuncture is a very effective treatment, but some people do not like the idea of using needles. In cases like this, therapies such as Qigong may be preferred as not only are needles not necessary, but it does not have to be performed in person either.

The realm of natural healing also extends to natural medicines as well. These herbal remedies have been around for millennia and were the original medicines before modern chemistry was invented. While they should not be a complete substitute for your regular prescriptions, they do make the perfect supplement and can give your body that natural healing that modern medicine does not.
