Buyers guide to Zebra Ribbons

September 2nd, 2009 by A Managed Blogger

When printing with Zebra or other thermal printers there are two main types of technology – DirectThermal and ThermalTransfer.  DirectThermal uses heat to create an image on a chemically coated, heat sensitive label.  This restricts the printing to black, restricts the materials and also makes the labels unsuitable for exposure to prolonged direct sunlight.

With ThermalTransfer however a ribbon is used to print the image, which means that a special label is not required and it can print on to all kinds of different materials of different types and thicknesses.  It also allows a much greater control of the thickness, quality and resistance of the image to abrasion and chemicals. These are also ideal for outdoor usage.

However, as with the labels there is a wide variety of difference types of Zebra Ribbons and it can get complicated trying to decide what to buy.

When choosing the best print ribbon you need to chose between the 3 main types: Resin, Wax and Wax/Resin.  You also need to match the Zebra Ribbons up to the type of labels you wish to print on as some combinations do not work very well.

Your Zebra supplier will be able to tell you which is the best combination of labels and Zebra Ribbons for your needs – Label King (www.labelking.co.uk) are happy to help with this if required.

Each of the 3 main types is broken down into 3 subtypes as explained below:

1) Wax/Resin - Formulated to offer high-quality, durable bar codes, text, and graphics on coated paper and matte synthetic materials.

3200 - Durable, special ink formulated ribbon is UL Recognized and CSA Component Acceptable when used with Zebra approved labels.

5555 - For printing bar codes on coated paper. Clear images and durability in harsh conditions.

5586 - Smear and scratch resistance in a variety of environments.

2) Resin – These Zebra Ribbons provide exceptional solvent resistance for the harshest environments.  Typically used on Gloss Paper/Synthetics.

4100 – For dense bar codes and graphics on a wide variety of materials. Excellent edge definition on synthetic substrates.

5095 – For high-density bar codes and high-resolution graphics.

5100 – For printing dense black images in harsh environments. Great choice for printed circuit board applications.  When used in combination with 8000T Z-Endure labels this gives up to 10 years external usage.

3) Wax - Zebra offers several performance ribbons formulated for high-quality printing on both coated and uncoated paper facestocks.

2100 – For high-speed printing. High print quality for barcodes on coated/uncoated labels and tags.

5319 – For tough-to-print uncoated or uneven tag stocks. Features unmatched scannability and performance, even on Tyvek.

5049 –For high-quality printing on coated facestocks.

One more thing to remember is that you should always use genuine Zebra supplies, so that you know you’ll:
• Reduce wear and tear on your printheads
• Lower the overall cost of printer operation
• Optimize performance with application matched labels and ribbons
• Have a choice of more than 300 UL/CSA approved ribbon/label combinations
• Enjoy access through Zebra partners to Zebra’s talented custom design team for solutions to your unique challenges

How to select the correct Zebra Labels for your requirements

September 2nd, 2009 by A Managed Blogger

There are hundreds of different Zebra Labels available off the shelf, and then there are almost limitless possibilities for custom labels.  Zebra have over 9000 dies for different shapes and sizes of labels, and then combine that with all the different materials and adhesive types!

So it can be a very daunting task to try and figure out which ones you need – so we’ve put together this buyers guide.

The first thing you need to decide is whether to go for ‘ThermalTransfer’ (using a ribbon) or ‘DirectThermal’ (burns the image into heat sensitive labels).

DirectThermal labels are generally used indoor with a short to medium term lifespan, while ThermalTransfer provides a much greater range of materials and can be used both indoor and outdoor with medium to long-term lifespans.

Once you’ve chosen the technology type (you obviously need to make sure you have the printer to match!) then you need to decide on the material to be used.

Paper is an inexpensive way to print in a variety of general-purpose applications, and you can choose between the Z-Perform range (Smooth bright white paper that provides the optimal balance between performance and price) and the Z-Select (Premium, bright white, ultra-smooth surface where image quality is important) range of Zebra Labels.

Synthetic offers more durable, long-lasting results with resistance to abrasion, moisture, and chemicals and you can choose from the following ranges:

Z-Supreme: Polyimide facestock designed for high-temperature environments up to 500°F.

Recommended for printed circuit board (PCB) labelling.

Z-Ultimate: Gloss polyester that provides outstanding print quality, unparalleled smear and scratch resistance, up to 3 years external usage.

Z-Xtreme: Matte polyester that provides outstanding image quality, resistant to chemicals, up to 3 years outdoors usage;

PolyPro: Matte polypropylene offers some flexibility for labelling curved surfaces, up to 1-2 years external usage;

PolyO: Corona-treated polyolefin that provides flexibility for labelling curved or rough surfaces; not recommended for more than 6 months outdoors;

These labels come with various combinations of adhesives as standard, but if you can’t find the one you want you can get them made to your specifications.  Here are the different types:

Acrylic: General-purpose; provides long-term adhesion; resistant to chemicals and UV exposure; works across a wide temperature range

Rubber: General-purpose; provides good initial tack; offers adhesion to rough surfaces; not recommended for auto apply

High-Performance: Offers higher resistant to chemicals and UV exposure; often has agency approval such as indirect food contact (FDA 175.105), UL/cUL and CSA approval

High-Temp: Remains strong at higher temperatures (over 300º F)

Cold-Temp: Remains strong at low temperatures (down to -112º F)

All-Temp: May be applied to temperatures below freezing (32º F)

Removable: Clean removal from most surfaces without damaging the label or the surface

Ultra-Removable: Clean removal from nearly all surfaces, including metal and glass, without damaging the label or the surface

Multi-Removable: Offers dual functionality; provides permanent long-term adhesion but also allows for clean removal; repositionable to allow for adjustment and reapplication

Hi-Tack Acrylic: Works well on hard-to-label surfaces and provides good resistance to chemicals and UV exposure

Hi-Tack Rubber: Works very well on hard-to-label surfaces;

There is also a wide range of specialty Zebra Labels for both paper and synthetic stock, and if you still can’t find the one you need then Zebra can manufacture a custom label to your specification.  You can choose the shape and size, the material, the adhesive type, the colour and so on.

A Zebra label printer works for every occasion.

February 11th, 2009 by A Managed Blogger

Many manufacturers make several types of label printers, each with unique features that make them perfect for specific label printing tasks. A Zebra label printer offers an absolutely astonishing array of label printers that leaves competing manufacturers far behind in terms of variety, pinpointing specific machines for certain print tasks and environments and for overall choice to the end user. From mobile printing in lightweight, small footprint models to more substantial desktop models, from specialized photo, RFID or industrial printing, Zebra printers can do the job handily.

Each Zebra label printer fits into one or more of the following categories:

·         Mobile printing. Zebra label printers in the MZ series feature tiny footprints, power options for recharging in cars or battery rechargers. Both the QL series and the RW series are slightly more expensive, with larger profiles, unique features and better components. All mobile Zebra label printers produce excellent thermal print output.

·         Desktop printing. The LP and TLP desktop printers offer faster printing, optimized components and designs for continuous use, various interface connection options to personal computers and specially developed label software.

·         Photo printing. Zebra’s R680 Professional Color Photo Printer is the company’s single offering for photo printing and is not used to print labels. Printing photos is a complex process involving sensitive inks and precise alignments. The R680 is ideal for a wide range of photo printing tasks.

·         RFID printing. The R402 is specifically designed to print labels with embedded RFID chips in them for wireless tracking of products and other items. Although the technology has only recently begun to come into its own, the R402 is solidly engineered and constructed to give years of service.

·         Industrial printing. Zebra has several industrial label printing machines – including the SL, S4M, ZM and XiIII models for heavy continuous output and blazingly fast print speeds. Zebra industrial printers all have heavy duty components and long useful lifetimes as production printer.

Label printers do one thing well: they print labels. This means that you don’t have to waste time setting up small print jobs to run on your regular printer. You use very inexpensive consumables when printing on your labelmaker, waste less media due to paper jams or incorrect setups and can potentially save hours of frustration trying to get a conventional printer to properly print out a small amount of small labels like return address or barcode labels.

Currently, there are many different makes and models of labelers to choose from. The following overview of manufacturers should give you some ideas on selecting the right printer for your use.

·         Brother makes a couple of different labelmaker, including the QL560VP thermal printer capable of printing 56 labels per minute, and the handheld P-Touch 1000 for easy portability and the convenience of printing labels exactly where they are needed.

Dymo also produces an extensive line of LetraTAG, LabelPoint and LabelManager handhelds and small footprint models for any label printing job requiring portability. Dymo’s industrial RhinoPRO models are suited for extreme conditions and use special adhesives and label backing materials for durability.

·         Toshiba’s TEC thermal label printers are geared primarily for stockrooms, warehouse, POS and other commercial and business applications.

·         Zebra labelmaker come in a variety of mobile and desktop styles for thermal printing at its best. Zebra makes specialized printers for various personal, business and industrial applications including small labels of all kinds, barcodes, RFIDs, and more.

Depending on your intended use, quantity of labels being printed and other factors like size, print method or cost of operation, selecting the right tool to create your labels is critical. With the variety of options available and wide range of costs, you may currently select from lots of alternatives. Seek out advice if you can, because your printer will last you a long time and you’ll be happier with your purchase if you choose one that’s just right for your needs.

A small printer saves time and money by not having to use special consumables, inks or label stock in your regular printer that inevitably lead to ‘test runs’ and misprints. The difference in barcode labels is in the details.

February 11th, 2009 by A Managed Blogger

At first glance, barcodes may all look alike – a series of vertical stripes of varying widths, often with numbers above or below – but each barcode performs its duty precisely by serving as a unique identifier for goods in a variety of personal, business and manufacturing environments. Each barcode provides individual numeric data relating to something’s price, catalogue number, issue date or other identifying criteria. The barcode system is quite versatile and one that can be used in a variety of ways.

Barcodes are everywhere.

They may be more commonly found in your local food market as a means of pricing your purchases and aiding stock control, but there are many more uses for them. Published materials like books and magazines use several coding schemes designed for the print and publishing industry. Manufacturers use barcode labels for many purposes including stock control and batch identification. Anything which requires unique identification can benefit from a barcode. This has led to a rise in the demand for barcode labels and has seen the use of these products gain recent footholds in the business and industrial worlds from small operations to major manufacturing concerns.

Barcode label printing.

With any advancement in technology, many people may feel left behind and unsure of what capabilities the product offers them. However, there are a great number of websites that can offer advice and assistance about the technology and capabilities of barcode labels.

The barcode label market is now a very large and growing one, leading to the introduction of many knock-off products, some of them quite inferior in quality to those of the original manufacturers. While it is not critical to use original labels for your labels at all times, it is important to use quality-made labels from reputable suppliers. It well worth the extra care to use quality labels designed specifically for the make and model of your particular barcode to avoid losses in quality and productivity when printing.

Getting the best results from your printer labels relies more on the quality of the printer itself. But any printer, no matter how wonderful, will quickly yield less than satisfactory results when cheaply made consumables are used. The overall quality of the print job depends on these two factors working together: the capability of the printer itself and the quality of labels, ribbons, print heads or anything else involved in printing labels. One excellent online source for product information and the barcode labels themselves is Label King at www.labelking.co.uk, offering fast shipping and highly competitive pricing on all barcode labels and related products.

A label printer is a wonderful way to save time and money.

February 11th, 2009 by A Managed Blogger

Today’s labelers are available in many styles and configurations, each designed for specific print jobs whether they are light, moderate or heavy. Providers and sellers of label printers consequently generally offer a huge selection of products from which to choose in many different price and feature categories.

To obtain the best possible results, it is advised to choose the style of label printer and labels that most closely match your intended use. A quality label printer need not be expensive, however, and the correct consumable materials like ink, printheads and paper or plastic labels generally are fairly cost effective in the long run when balanced off against labour and supply costs for provisioning and keeping larger multi-purpose printers running.
